Don't forget to follow me as I read and learn from this book along with my friends. If you want to discuss with fellow learners, come and participate in our @clubhouse event on Saturdays at 7 pm:
There is a structure to find all the numbers in less than a minute. Do you want to know it? You should read the book. You come away convinced to follow a structured approach in everything. Since reading this book, I have tried to follow this approach:
Our most important financial asset is our own capacity to earn. If you don't invest in your capacity to produce, you limit your options for the future.
When we think of assets, we usually think of financial. But there are three kinds of assets: • physical • financial • human Don't withdraw your principal for short-term gains. Dwindling principal may not be visible to you now, but it will affect your future.
If you focus on the golden eggs (benefits) and neglect the goose, you will soon be without the asset that produces golden eggs. The lesson of this fable is true anywhere there are assets and benefits - families, societies, companies....
You might have heard of the golden goose fable. True effectivess is a function of: • what is produced (the golden eggs) • the producing asset or capacity to produce (the goose) You need to balance taking care of both the goose and the eggs.
Interdependence is a mature, advanced concept. Only independent people can choose to be interdependent. Dependent people don't know and own enough about themselves.
When you are born, you are dependent. Most people get to physically independent; but still intellectually dependent on others. Very few progress to interdependence.
The #7habits move you steadily along the maturity continum. As you develop these habits, you progress through: • dependence • independence • interdependence You can't jump from dependence to interdependence, though you don't have to wait at each stage to move to the other.
You can't have a piecemeal formula to developing effectiveness. Your effectiveness is the result of incremental, sequential, highly integrated work in all the three dimension: • knowledge • skill • desire
Habits = knowledge + skill + desire • knowledge = what to do & why • skill = how to do • desire = motivation (want to do it) To make something a habit you need all the three. Creating a habit requires work in all 3 dimensions.
Our habits determine our character and our character determines our destiny. So our habits are an important factor in our lives. But what are habits?
@bespokespeeches Were you a consulting writer for Yes Primeminsiter @bespokespeeches ;-)
We also discussed how businesses and employees can cash in on this trend. Hope you listen and enjoy our conversation.
It might even spread to executive positions. Soon we might see fractional CTOs and CFOs. This week, I spoke to Shresth Shrivastav, founder of BeGig. In this podcast, we discussed trends that led up to this point, why this trend will only continue to grow exponentially.
On the joining date, HR departments wait with palpitations for prospective employees. They would be better off hiring a freelancer. This trend is only going to accelerate as employment dynamics change after covid.
Content marketers, software engineers, and project managers are now embracing this trend. As of now, they are not "secure jobs". It will change in a few years. The companies are having difficulty finding employees. The joining rate is about 50%.
Actors & musicians have been working together to make movies mostly as freelancers. Directors, actors, and musicians are not employed by companies. Players are no different. Kholi and Dhoni play for franchises, but they are not employees. Instead of jobs, they have careers.
Startup jobs are no longer scary with reports of millions of dollars in investment. They have become mainstream. There is now a new trend - solopreneurship, aka freelancing. It is not really a new trend in the market if you think about it.
As MNCs began paying well and sending their employees to onsite assignments, those jobs became attractive. Later, when startups began to appear, the same scene repeated itself. Jobs at MNCs were considered more secure than at startups.
@gjerome Thank you Jerome
@ranjithajeurkar Instead of arresting those goons, govt closed the schools. Thank God, they didn't arrest these students
@yazhini_pm Isn’t both kind of over generalising? Is Narayana Murty rich only because of exploitive capitalism? And the scores of Infy employees who got ESOPs?
@aurasky_ No. It is on the lines of creator economy that we talked about.
@thinking_slow That's exactly what I'm doing with my podcast Gravitas WINS Radio. • You learn • You gain respect • You attract traffic No downside.
@Korn_Ferry It forced me to think about everything I do under @GravitasWins - coaching, podcast, and newsletter. I'll share my thinking in the coming days. If you are interested, please follow me. Even better, throw me questions. Both of us can learn finding the answer.
In his interview with @Korn_Ferry, Lafley gives example of Olay Go read it. Excellent piece on strategy in general and then it goes specific into applying those principles for Olay. If you read one thing this week to ponder, let it be this:
Strategy leads to: • specific set of customers • specific positioning of your product to those customers • specific design and tech choice for products • specific distribution channels Specific is terrific And strategy leads to specific
Strategy is a choice. Strategy is not keeping all options open Options are good; but strategy selects a choice. Don't be afraid of bad / wrong choice. "Our strategy is to be opportunistic" is a rationalization, not a strategy.
Strategy is about winning the game, not just playing it. Define: • what is winning for you • where do you want to play? what are the boundaries? • what's your advantage? • what capabilities do you need? • what support systems do you need?
@anubhabhonsle It will surely break twitter ;-)
@assuredgain @velumania Hasn't TN always welcomed NIndians? Almost all biz men in Madras are either Jains or Gujaratis or something like that. Their successive generations have embraced Tamil as their language. In fact, TN has welcomed outsiders all the time. Most our CMs have been outsiders.
@xavierroy @keepkwizing Awesome. Why don't we do that as part of our book club reviews? May be on Sunday (or any other day), we setup an hours time; 30 min of writing show and tell review comments would you like that? would you coordinate?
@psankar Interesting. Are the docker images hosted on docker hub or does your employer has a local registry / repository?
@aurasky_ @Entrepreneurfo3 We are reviewing "The 7 habits" book by @StephenRCovey Fundamental principle of the book - Take responsibility If you are free join us on Saturdays at 7 pm
@nirupamakotru That's because you are half Tamilian madam. Good to discover you here on Twitter.
@FauzanGhaazi @aurasky_ Thanks Fauzan. Any specific point that resonated with you?
@marshallk Thanks for sharing Marshall. Is it from a book / talk? Where can I learn more of this?
@Aliofonzy43 @venikunche This is a fantastic idea. Thanks Angel for creating it. Hope #techfaqs become a kind of compendium of all tech questions.
@xavierroy Doesn't wordle improve your vocabulary.
@Clubhouse It is refreshing to read the book again now after 20 years. So much has changed - social media, especially. But the principles have not.
@Clubhouse We all have many maps in our head. Primarily they fall into: • maps of the way things are • maps of the way things should be Unless we change our maps we will always fall short of our potential.
@Clubhouse Lenses are like maps. If you have the wrong map, nothing else will get you to the destination: • speed • positive attitude • shortcuts
@Clubhouse If you are looking for a shortcut, remember this quote by Cecil B. DeMille > It is impossible for us to break the law. We can only break ourselves against the law. In any case, you'll pay the price.
@Clubhouse To change ourselves, we should change the lens through which we are viewing the world. We must pay the price and follow the process much like a plant. There is no shortcut. Figure out the price and be ready to pay it.
@Clubhouse Examples of "Be" • If you want to be trusted, be trustworthy • if you want to have a happy marriage, be the kind of spouse who generates positive energy • If you want to have a more pleasant, cooperative teenager, be a more understanding, empathic, consistent, loving parent
@Clubhouse #7habits is about fundamental principles of human effectiveness. "Personality" success literature focuses on "have & do" goals "Character" success literature focuses on "be" goals
@Clubhouse Focus on personality leads to external behvaiours much like putting lipstick on pigs. It leads to manipulative, deceptive behaviours (which we see in products following "hooked" methods)
