The pursuit could be building a career, starting a business, or any other venture.
What is an unfair advantage? Something others can't copy but gives you an edge over others in the same pursuit. It could be: • Parents' status • Wealth • A degree • Alma matter • Looks • Stamina • Intelligence • Brain power
Why have an unfair advantage? World is chaotic and competitive. Failure is the norm. Want to increase the odds of success? You need all the support you can get. Having unfair advantages increases your chances of success, but it also creates a chasm between you and others.
@aakash_rewari @vivaldibrowser Thanks Aakash
@prla 30 days - not too long; not to short.
@_zenman I never had it before. Spicy and it was well prepared.
@gokul_i @TheAkshitS From quick glance on this site, svelte seems to have the least code for all features.
@WesleySam7 Agree. But I don’t think it is only with Indian firms. Most product companies fall for this - look at LinkedIn.
@malpani @ImAkshayPandey1 Dr. You said: > unlike the so-called 'single book of God' other religions peddle That’s what I was commenting. I’ll stop here.
@prla When the TVs fist started available we had only 3 brands in our town. One Friday dad came home: Which TV should we buy? Me: BPL Dad: don’t you know it it too expensive for us? Sister: Onida Dad: it’s with devil. No way. Mom: you tell Dad: I already ordered solidare 😀
@prla Did you work for my dad 😜😱
@ImAkshayPandey1 @malpani Thanks for saying this: > We can be proud of our own religion without belittling other religions with ‘smirk’ tone If you don’t know enuf abt your religion you know little abt other’s religion. Calling a spade requires enuf knowledge abt the spade.
@flyosity @intentionally Companies think they need specialists - say a Java developer. What they need is a T or U shaped expert: They need a Java developer who can understand e-commerce domain and explain what he does to prospects. What they don’t need is generalists
@fmarciano Compounding is the wonder of wealth building. ⇒ • keep revenue > expenses • start wealth building early • find compounding assets (mostly equities) • invest regularly • sit quietly as the asset does its job
@malpani That’s why forward thinking leaders in TN like Annadurai choose to have 2 language model - mother tongue (Tamil) and English. And two is enough.
@malpani @anandkjain Question is not if the founding fathers did the right thing given their context. Question is what are we doing today with the resources and whatever legacy we have. We can keep looking back to the legacy to build farther; no point in stuck looking back at the legacy.
@malpani @anandkjain African countries, Sri Lanka (shares history with India/Tamilnadu; so fertile across country; been there), Pakistan Almost all countries have glorious past. Just that we don't know their history.
@anandkjain @malpani Concur Anand. What I see more and more is judging founding father's work through today's prism. Their context was different. Which of the country that got independence at that time stands tall as India? (Irony is we don't judge actions of today's leaders with today's prism)
@malpani If we copy anything from other countries this is something we should copy - independent institutions - police, judiciary, media, universities etc. Then many other reforms will fall in place automatically. (PS: I know this independence is tested many times and there is lobby)
@pankaj013 @prla > example of centralised planning and decentralised execution This is something I would like to explore further. Could be a topic for our podcast interview too Pankaj
@agNishchay Bang on. It has never been easier to build a product over the weekend. But the persistence needed to think of all edge cases and handling them - my gosh … that’s what makes product development harder
@malpani While growing up there was emphasis on critical thinking (my Tamil teacher Murugan would drill this into us). May be I was just lucky in those aspects.
@malpani I studied in TN state board (not CBSE). - I learnt abt all Indian rulers - from Gupta to Akbar to Cholas - I don't think TN state board was biased with muslim rulers (that's what I hear on twitter) - Our Tamil language subject was rich with Hindu literature
@malpani ever since you posted the first twee on this series, I have been thinking. my 2cents: - we focused more on STEM; left out literature - we read subjects with aim to pass not to learn - we read only school books not outside ones (we didn't have time) - school books were biased
@CodingCommando @_zenman I expanded this as a blog post here: Hope this is helpful. If you have any further questions, please ask.
@malpani May be. - Current discourse in the country doesn't. - Current practices doesn't show that every is equal
@AbhayVenkatesh1 Interesting point Abhay. Though I've read philosophy, never connected like this. Could you share any secrets you hit up on like this? Or any helpful reading material?
@malpani We copy their constitution, we copy their results too. We pick up one end of the stick. Other end comes too.
@AbhayVenkatesh1 What are the ways we can build unfair advantage? Esp those who don’t have privileges - from a developing country, didn’t study in a great college…
@arvidkahl @robwalling How do you develop this mindset - celebrator of others success? - Is it abundance mindset? - or does it come only when you have gone way ahead?
@benputt @uk_timwilson Asking not as a pastor. How do you talk abt your faith with friends who have this attitude?
@ayushtweetshere How to find those & keep shipping in the early days?
@CodingCommando @_zenman Biz mentality (primarily it is abundance mindset) is diff from employee mindset (primarily scarcity / fear mindset). This is going to be the greatest challenge you'll face.
@CodingCommando @_zenman 1. believe it is possible 2. start doing the 3 things mentioned here: 3. identify what is imp for you (ref: - ex: I left high salary for freedom; moved to a 2nd tier city) 4. develop biz owner mindset 5. Be ok to start at small work
@CodingCommando @_zenman That's why I quit as an employee and work as independent contractor. I've built it as a lifestyle biz 👇
@malpani @FamilyIsSchool Just started Dr. Will share more details as we start using. In fact thinking of asking the boys to make a product review as they did of YVisuals App by @SathyaHQ & @LeeLaunches here:
@mostlynotworkin Thank you for these. Adding to my list.
@Kamphey @SathyaHQ @LeeLaunches @tnvora Primary point of sharing this story: @Kamphey I agree with the directive - talk to users. There is no better way to know what to build, how to delight them, asking for testimonials, and what other services should you offer.
@Kamphey @SathyaHQ @LeeLaunches @tnvora He is from a city in India and his prospects & clients are mostly in Europe & Canada. When he started going abroad from India was very expensive and cumbersome too. But he went. Met them in person. That’s how he gained ideas to build his business.
@Kamphey @SathyaHQ @LeeLaunches @tnvora When I started my startup, I met a veteran CEO of the city for advice. He gave only one: get out of the office and meet customers. And he went on to share how he met customers, discovered new business offerings, and how he grew from a 2nd tier city.
@tunguz We've heard this before: "a future factory staffed by just a man and a dog." It never came to pass and these claims also meet the same fate. Why? 5 reasons
@_zenman I wrote this in 2018 and tried to live by it:
@mostlynotworkin I was surprised to read that post. But glad.
@WesleySam7 @malpani I wish some Tamil Hindu translates into English. It is such a deep lovely book. One ex: every village has a temple and temple is the highest building; on top there is a pot which has 7 types of seeds. why? if there is flood and it destroys agri, you can restart with those seeds
@prla You can read @robkhenderson's essay about Thomas Sowell's take on this:
@prla If you are looking for a coach / mentor, look for honesty over niceness. I was lucky to find @sastrytumuluri early in my career. He is not nice (😱), but my god he is so honest with his feedback. It hurts while hearing the feedback but it sets you on the growth path
