3) Post appraisal: Reality is negotiable. Nobody is happy consistently about appraisal results. Negotiate what you want. It doesn't have to be about money all the time.

2) During appraisal: Make your points emphatically, but don't fight with your manager. Ask for specific feedback, not generic "you could do better."

1) Pre-appraisal: Not all companies have the same priorities. Understand the priorities of your company. Don't be a square peg in your company. Take notes for your appraisal throughout the year. We remember only recent things. Note your achievements, client appreciations etc.
